During the French Revolution, Chantilly became a prison and a theater of political strife in the Oise department. This work compiles authentic documents, lists of detainees, and unpublished materials related to arrests in 1793, the imprisonments at Chantilly, and the fate of the château. Sorel draws on archival sources and prior reports to present a chronological narration of seizures, perquisitions, the relocation of prisoners to Paris and other towns, and the eventual fate of Chantilly's estates. The volume also includes an introductory preface and a comprehensive list of inmates, illustrating the brutal efficiency and human dimension of revolutionary justice, as well as the transformation of a noble residence into a detention site, and its later sale and demolition.
