Heaven, Or, An Earnest And Scriptural Inquiry Into The Abode Of The Sainted Dead by Henry Harbaugh. This work is a 19th-century Protestant inquiry into life after death, offering a biblically grounded defense of a tangible, local heaven rather than a mere state of existence. Harbaugh surveys competing theories about the afterlife, including the notion of progressive ascensions, the intermediate abode (Hades, purgatory), the transmigration of souls, and the sleep of the soul, and argues for the saints’ immediate entrance into a real, material heaven at death with transformed bodies, to be perfected at the resurrection. The volume also treats the relationship between heaven and earth, detailing divine, angelic, and saintly sympathy and the continuing communion of saints across death.
