Discourse On The Rectitude Of Human Nature by George Washington Burnap. In this early American theological treatise, Burnap argues that human nature is fundamentally good, a noblest work of God, and perverted only by sin. He challenges the Westminster doctrine of total depravity, contending that moral agency and a natural moral sense survive the Fall. Burnap grounds his case in the universality of language, conscience, and moral perception, and asserts that religion is innate to mankind (natural religion) and that salvation is accessible to all people, not only the elect. He maintains Christianity as a remedial, educative system that strengthens virtue through truth, conscience, and religious education, rather than a radical alteration of human constitution. The Gospel's aim, he argues, is to transform character and behavior through teaching and conversion of the will, without requiring a miraculous reconstitution of human nature.
