Religion And Learning Capable Of Being Rendered Mutually Serviceable, Or Mutually Prejudicial, To Each Other: A Sermon Preached Before The University Of Oxford, At St. Mary's, On Act-Sunday, July 11. 1762. By Thomas Fothergill. This sermon, delivered at Oxford in 1762, argues that religion and learning are not enemies but mutually supportive. Fothergill contends that knowledge disciplines the affections and enlarges the capacity for devotion, while religious life provides direction, virtue, and a motive for serious study. He divides his discussion into three points: first, that learning can improve the mind and therefore foster piety; second, that both domains are prone to abuse when pursued in isolation, leading to fanaticism or skepticism; and third, that their union yields substantial benefits, tempering fervor, guiding worship, and promoting moral character. He cites biblical passages, ancient authors, and examples from church history to illustrate how study of languages, nature, and morality can serve faith. He emphasizes temperance, humility, and the practical aim of applying knowledge toward virtue and the glory of God. He concludes by urging students to cultivate both learning and devotion as complementary paths to wisdom and salvation.
