Synopsis
“Report Of The Exploring Expedition” by J. S. Newberry. The volume collects the official account of the 1859 San Juan exploration led by Captain J. N. Macomb, with Newberry’s geological report accompanying it. It contains the general expedition narrative, a comprehensive geological treatise covering Carboniferous, Permian, Triassic, Cretaceous, and (where indicated) Tertiary formations, and an extensive fossil section prepared by F. B. Meek and Newberry. The work documents the route from Santa Fe to the junction of Grand and Green Rivers in Utah and provides detailed discussions of broader Rocky Mountain–Colorado Plateau geology, including major canons such as Labyrinth and the Colorado Canyon. It also presents palaeobotanical and paleontological findings from copper-mines at Abiquiu and Los Bronces, with systematic sections of the Sage Plain, the Animas, Chama, and San Juan valleys. Published by the Government Printing Office in 1876, with prefatory material from 1875, the volume remains a foundational reference for American exploration and geologic history.
