Synopsis
Alhambra Alhambra charts the rise of American and British/French fur enterprises in North America and the Pacific Northwest, foregrounding John Jacob Astor’s ambitions to fuse Atlantic and Pacific trade into a continental network. Drawing on narratives of overland and sea journeys, the text follows the Tonquin's voyage to the Columbia River, the Missouri crossing, and the perilous wintering camps of traders and voyageurs across the Missouri basin, Wind River country, and the Rocky Mountains. Through portraits of Hunt, Lisa, Crooks, and a constellation of traders, interpreters, and Native leaders (including Arickaras, Sioux, Crow, Cheyenne, and Nez Perce bands), the work blends biography, company politics, and ethnographic observation.
