Report Upon Experiments Made By Assistant W. H. Hearding Upon The Compressive Power Of Pine & Hemlock Timber Under The Direction Of Major D. C. Houston by William Hellins Hearding. In this 1871 report to the U.S. Engineer Office, Milwaukee, Assistant Engineer W. H. Hearding presents experimental comparisons of the compressive strength of Hemlock and Pine timbers used in harbor crib construction on the Great Lakes. The study uses bolted connections through paired timbers, various bolt lengths, and methods to measure the force required to separate timbers. The results show that upper timbers tend to slide or lift on bolts unless the bolts are headed, and that the lower timbers can exert greater compressive powers. Hemlock generally shows higher strength than Pine but is more prone to splitting; Pine is weaker but can be more durable in certain configurations. The report recommends heading bolts to increase retentive strength and discusses practical implications for crib design, including a proposed reduction in bolt length from 32 inches to 22 inches and cost considerations. It also notes a harbor example (Sheboygan) and includes an appendix critiquing strength coefficients used in calculations.
