Letters On Syphilis by Philippe Ricord. This translated work collects Ricord’s classic correspondence on venereal diseases, centering on syphilis,Blennorrhagia, chancre, and the debated origins of the venereal virus. Translated by D. D. Slade, the volume begins with Prefaces and introductions that frame Ricord’s shift from anecdote to experiment, and his insistence on rigorous observation and testing to identify the etiologic agent. The letters trace Ricord’s method: extracting the virus from a known source, observing its effects in controlled settings, and distinguishing virulent from nonvirulent forms of mucous discharges. He argues for a single syphilitic virus that manifests differently depending on tissue predisposition, the role of concealed chancres, and the limits of incubation. He details inoculation experiments in humans (and attempts at animal inoculation), the concept of syphilization, and the public-health implications of prostitution and prophylaxis. The Treatise concludes with discussions of treatment (mercury and iodide), the prognosis of chancres, buboes, and tertiary symptoms, and the ethics of experimental medicine. An Appendix collects hospital formulas and extracts from Ricord’s Clinical Lectures. It remains a foundational text in the rational study of venereal disease.
