Manfred, A Dramatic Poem by George Gordon Byron. Manfred is a Gothic-Romantic verse drama in which a brilliant yet isolated magian named Manfred withdraws from humanity to pursue forbidden knowledge and dominion over the natural world. In a solitary vigil on the Jungfrau and surrounding heights, he conjures elemental spirits—Earth, Air, Fire, Water—and pleads for a boon that would erase memory and unlock absolute power. The spirits offer vast kingdoms, eternal life, and mastery over the elements, but warn that the price is perilous: the past cannot be escaped, and oblivion remains elusive. Torn between ambition and remorse, Manfred declines most gifts until a final visitation from his beloved Astarte, who speaks in ominous terms of mercy and doom. Throughout, Byron probes themes of knowledge, pride, guilt, and the torment of immortality; the drama culminates in encounters with Arimanes, Nemesis, and the Destinies, and ends with Manfred’s solitary confrontation with death. A landmark example of Romantic Gothic tragedy.
