Reflections Upon Reason by John Hildrop. In this early 18th-century treatise, John Hildrop analyzes the many senses of the word reason and argues that clear, precise understanding of reason is foundational to truth, morality, and religion. He identifies five senses: reason as the abstract truth or natural order; reason as the faculty of the understanding; reason as argumentative method; reason as the medium of proof; and reason as the reflex act by which the mind applies, compares, and derives conclusions. He defines reason as the just exercise of the mind upon clear ideas, and defends a pragmatic form of natural religion anchored in the divine order and the laws of nature. The work critiques misuses of reason that breed skepticism, and it defends Christian revelation as compatible with, and clarified by, reason. It addresses objections to miracles, the Trinity, incarnation, and resurrection, arguing that faith rests on sincerity and disciplined inquiry. Throughout, Hildrop urges free inquiry under moral constraint, seeking to reconcile reason with faith and to promote the peace of religion and society.
