A Dissertation On The Course And Probable Termination Of The Niger by Rufane Shaw Donkin. This historical-geographical treatise investigates the course and termination of the Niger River, arguing for a generalized 'Nile' concept rather than a single Nile ending, and tracing etymology from Hindustani to blue/black waters applied to major rivers. Donkin reinterprets ancient sources (Herodotus, Ptolemy, Pliny) and critiques later maps by D’Anville and Rennell, proposing corrections to Ptolemy’s longitudes (notably reanchoring the first meridian through the Cape Verd islands) and modeling a Niger that flows eastward from Mauritania toward the Lake Chad region and beyond into the Nile of Bornou.
