On Rheumatism In Its Various Forms by Roderick Macleod. This 1842 medical treatise investigates rheumatism in its external and internal manifestations, dividing the disease into five principal forms: Rheumatic Fever (acute rheumatism), Capsular or arthritic rheumatism, Chronic or Muscular rheumatism, Neuralgic rheumatism, and Periosteal rheumatism. Drawing on cases from St. George's Hospital and the Gulstonian Lectures (delivered in 1837), Macleod discusses environmental triggers such as atmospheric vicissitudes and hereditary predisposition, the distribution of disease by sex and age, and the primary seat of inflammation in fibrous tissues. The work covers clinical features, diagnosis, and prognosis, including heart involvement (pericarditis and endocarditis) and the evolution of treatment practices of the time (bleeding, purging, mercury, colchicum, iodides). It also surveys relations to gout and the development of pathology and therapy in the 19th century.
