Dialogue by William Roye. This English edition presents William Roye’s Dialogue Between a Christian Father and His Stubborn Son, a Protestant polemical treatise produced in the later 1520s. The work takes the form of a Dialogue in which a father instructs his son in the fundamentals of the Christian faith, arguing that true faith rests on the authority of Scripture and the grace of Christ rather than on external works or papal authority. Topics include God’s nature, Christ, justification by faith, the uselessness of certain prescribed works (confession, pilgrimages, fasts), the proper role of baptism and the Lord’s Supper as signs of grace rather than physical necessities, and the limits of church authority, excommunication, and obedience to civil rulers. The Dialogue promotes a practical, biblically grounded Christianity, emphasizes charity and discipline within the church, and advocates the inward life of faith over ritual. It is an important early English-language document of Protestant thought and a window into Reformist concerns before the Augsburg Confession.
