"Feudalität Und Unterthanverband" by Paul Rudolf Von Roth. This scholarly work offers a revisionist, source-based examination of the origins and nature of feudal relations in the Frankish world. It challenges the view that feudal statehood arose from a single vassalage or from early Antrustiones, arguing instead that seniorate and vassalage emerged in the Carolingian era through complex institutional reforms, secularization of church lands, and evolving royal authority. Drawing on capitularies, legal texts (Lex Salica, Ripuarian law), and ecclesiastical canons, the author analyzes the senior lordship (Seniorat), the relationships between Vasallen and Antrustiones, the roles of Hintersassen, immunities and beneficia/precarium. He critiques Waitz’s readings and demonstrates that protection, guardianship, and military obligations extend beyond simple vassalage. The study explores church–state interactions, the emergence of a feudal administration, and the varied trajectories from Merovingian to Carolingian governance, showing a gradual but uneven transition to feudal structures in the 9th–11th centuries.
