A Practical System Of Rhetoric, Or, The Principles And Rules Of Style: Inferred From Examples Of Writing by Samuel Phillips Newman. This early 19th-century rhetoric manual argues that good writing rests on two foundations: sound thought and precise language. It presents a systematic program for students: study by examples, cultivate reasoning, and develop refined taste. The book surveys topics such as thought as the foundation of writing, the nature of taste, verbal criticism, sentence construction, and transitions, with chapters on the modes of writing (didactic, argumentative, narrative, descriptive) and on figures of speech. Newman emphasizes using examples to illustrate rules rather than rote memory, and he proposes a plan to fix a writer's object, outline divisions, and connect parts with natural transitions. He also discusses models of excellence, the relation between language and thought, and practical guidelines for improving style, perspicuity, and vivacity. The volume includes a Preface and a series of illustrative excerpts. This edition reproduces the original 1827 Bowdoin College context with contemporary typography.
