Of The Talmudists Considered, With Some Remarks On Their AEnigmatical And Sublime Method Of Instruction. Occasion'D By The Rev. Mr. John Gill's Preface To His Learned Comment On The New Testament by John Dove. This 18th?century pamphlet is a pointed polemic against Rabbinical learning and the Talmud, prompted by John Gill's Preface to his commentary on the New Testament. Dove argues that Rabbinical writings and the Talmud distort, obscure, or undermine Christian truth, and that Hebrew Scripture, rightly understood, provides the authentic foundation for Christian belief. He contends that reliance on Rabbinical exegesis leads readers away from the revealed Word, promotes a flood of legendary and fantastical claims, and jeopardizes the authority of the Bible. The work surveys alleged Rabbinical misreadings, critiques the methods and interpretive rules of Talmudists, and defends the sufficiency of the Old and New Testaments for faith and doctrine. It also engages with the Preface to Gill's commentary and argues for a return to a plain, scripture-centered understanding of revelation.
