Labour And Knowledge. Labour And Rest. Two Lectures, Etc by Joseph Napier. The two lectures delivered in 1856 address the relationship between labour, knowledge, and the welfare of the working classes. Napier argues that labor is a divine ordinance and that knowledge enhances productive power; the two must be cultivated together to promote moral and material progress. He demonstrates how science, agriculture, and industry have raised yields and created wealth, and argues that such progress must be guided by Christian principles. He calls for practical education, libraries, and adult instruction; temperate recreation; and social arrangements that protect workers, families, and schooling. Napier condemns idle idleness and social strife, urging that property comes with duties and that the state should support virtuous institutions without heavy-handed regulation. He lauds Wilberforce and Shaftesbury, advocates Sabbath rest, and concludes that national strength rests on a Christian public spirit, disciplined labor, and the blessing of God.
