Synopsis
Ephemera by George Edward Rice. Ephemera is a 19th-century American volume of verse compiled by Rice and published in Boston in 1852 (preface dated November 1852). The collection assembles lyric pieces, parodies, and moralist poems that range from romantic miniatures to social satire. It opens with the Preface and a diverse Contents listing pieces such as Address to the Mermaid, The Charcoal Vendor, The Lyre of Love, A Dog-Gerel, Wed Not for Gold, The Bloomers Costume, False Charity, The Tears of the Vine, The Future, and Romeo Montague to Juliet Capulet. The poems mingle affectionate love lyrics with moral admonitions about wealth, charity, vanity, patriotism, and human virtues. The tone shifts from light humor and whimsy to earnest exhortation and critique of social pretensions—indeed, even satire of turn-of-the-century reform and fashion.
