Elements Of Rhetoric by Richard Whately is a comprehensive treatise on the art and science of persuasion and composition. The work combines a history of rhetoric with a practical plan for instruction, outlining four parts: Introduction and plan; Part I on conviction (the address to the understanding, with propositions, arguments, and their arrangement); Part II on persuasion (emotional appeals, audience disposition, and introductory/refutation techniques); Part III on style (perspicuity, energy, and elegance); and Part IV on elocution or delivery (reading vs. speaking, natural vs. artificial delivery, and exercises to cultivate a natural manner). Whately discusses the distinction between inference and proof, the a priori and from example arguments, and the role of signs and testimony in argumentation. He argues for a middle course between extreme generalities and pedantry, advocates a student-centered approach to exercises, and defends the use of rules as aids to improved composition and critical thought.
