On The Alternation Of Generations; Or The Propagation And Development Of Animals Through Alternate Generations — Johannes Japetus Sm. Steenstrup. This study surveys how certain animals produce offspring that differ in form and are in turn capable of producing further generations that revert to the parent type. Steenstrup presents detailed observations across several invertebrate groups, including the Medusae (as seen in the life cycle from free-swimming Medusa to polyp-like stages), claviform polypes such as Coryne and Campanularia, Salpa chains, and various Trematoda (Distoma). He distinguishes an alternation of generations from metamorphosis and argues that what appears as metamorphosis may involve a series of developmental generations linked across individuals, with "nurses" or "ammene" that foster the young and the "zurses" that bear the germs in ovaria-like conditions. The author compiles historical observations (Sars, Lovén, Siebold, Eschricht) and proposes a general natural explanation for alternating generations, suggesting its ubiquity across lower animal groups and its relation to the parental like reproduction in Ascidians and Trematoda.
