Synopsis
Union Pamphlets by Rev. Dr. Clarke. This 1799 political-economic tract argues for incorporating Ireland into Great Britain under a single imperial Parliament as the best remedy to political division and to promote imperial strength, security, and prosperity. The work combines economic analysis, constitutional theory, and moral argument to show that Ireland’s commerce and wealth are deeply tied to Britain and would be better served by union through integrated markets, common taxation, and shared institutions. It surveys data on linen and other trades, discusses historical precedents such as the 1707 Scotland–England union, and addresses objections about taxation, Dublin’s status, and Irish representation.
