Synopsis
Elements Of Geometry by Adrien Marie Legendre is the English translation (translated from the French by John Farrar) of Legendre's comprehensive treatise on geometry. The work surveys plane geometry, solids, and the measure of circles, with a sequence of definitions, axioms, theorems, corollaries, and problems designed for university?level study. It is divided into two parts: the first covers plane figures, including the circle, polygons, and the measure of angles and areas; the second treats of solids, including plane and solid angles, polyhedrons, the sphere, and the three round bodies (cylinder, cone, and sphere). In addition to its core theorems, the text provides appended problems and an extensive 'Questions in Geometry' exercise and notes on terminology such as symmetry and equivalence. The translation preserves the eighteenth? and nineteenth?century pedagogical approach, with algebraic notation and a preference for synthetic, axiomatic development.
