Sentiment Not Principle; Or, An Old Man’s Legacy By M. De Havilland is a two-volume English moral tale published in 1835. The frame narrative is a readerly device in which a modern English clerical family, led by Mr. Rivers, discovers a manuscript left by a dying neighbour, Evans. Evans’s long memoir charts a life of cultivation and error, spiritual awakening, and careful reform as he travels from England to the Mediterranean, Italy, and France. Across Woodlands, Lovedale, Foley Hall, and a succession of European cities, the tale interrogates the tension between sentiment (emotional sensibility) and principle (Christian virtue and prudent conduct). It dwells on issues of social policy, especially the English Poor Laws and pauperism, and condemns indulgence in worldly pleasures, while praising temperance, charity, and domestic virtue. The work advocates religion as the true basis of happiness and social reform, and ends with a call to live by principle rather than sentiment, through a family’s restored peace and renewed commitment to benevolence and faith.
