Synopsis

Mathieu Ropars: Et Cetera by Emile Svuvestre presents a mosaic of translated prose and verse from mid-19th-century French writing. The collection ranges from a long narrative about Mathieu Ropars, a Breton lazaretto keeper whose two isles near Brest shelter a family during a yellow fever quarantine, to a suite of sketches, satires, and lyric pieces set in Europe and America. In Mathieu Ropars, the keeper, his wife Geneviève, their children Joséphe and Francine, and Dorot the cousin endure hope and despair as disease closes in; the story culminates in sacrifice, a perilous river-crossing, and a poignant, bitter ending. Other pieces include Thrice Only (memoir-like recollections of Mary Verner); The Missing Mariners (a dream-vision of Franklin's expedition); The New Hampshire Alps (a mountaineering sketch); Mandragora—By the Dozen (a guide to waking dreams); and various poems such as The Last of the Roman Gladiators, A Well Known Document (a playful paraphrase of the Declaration of Independence), and Bel Piede. The volume blends travel writing, romance, and philosophical reflection with humor and lyric intensity.
