Synopsis
Manfred: A Dramatic Poem, Issue 4 by George Gordon Byron. Manfred, a brilliant but solitary Magian of the High Alps, pursues forbidden knowledge and power beyond mortality. After invoking elemental spirits in a Gothic gallery, he tests their gifts—mind, dominion over elements, oblivion, even immortal life—yet finds no relief from his guilt and restlessness. He confronts the spirits of earth, air, and ocean, and encounters the ghostly beloved Astarte, whose voice is both solace and torment. Throughout his vigil on the Jungfrau, he resists obedience to Arimanes and Nemesis and debates penitence with an Abbot of St. Maurice. In pursuit of meaning, he measures the limits of science, philosophy, and passion, ultimately choosing a solitary, tragic death rather than submission to their powers. The drama, set among the Bernese Alps, explores themes of knowledge, power, guilt, mortality, and the struggle for redemption within Romantic imagination.
