Synopsis
Elements Of English Grammar: With An Appendix, Containing Exercises In Parsing, Examples Of False Orthography, Violations Of The Rules Of Syntax, Exercises In Punctuation, And Questions For Examination : Designed For The Use Of Schools, Academies, And Private Learners by Austin Osgood Hubbard presents a traditional prescriptive grammar program from the early 19th century. The text defines English grammar as the art of speaking and writing the language correctly and divides study into four parts: Orthography, Etymology, Syntax, and Prosody, with an explicit emphasis on practical usage. Orthography covers letters, vowels and consonants, syllables, capitalization, and spelling. Etymology discusses the nine parts of speech, noun classes, pronouns, adjectives, verbs, moods, tenses, and conjugation, including irregular and defective verbs. Syntax outlines rules for noun agreement, case, pronoun agreement, article usage, prepositions, conjunctions, and punctuation, supplemented by extensive examples. Prosody addresses punctuation, pronunciation, utterance, emphasis, pauses, inflections, tones, and rhetorical figures. The Appendix offers parsing exercises, examples of false orthography, and punctuation questions, to test understanding. The work emphasizes disciplined self-study and careful reading as keys to mastering grammar.
