Synopsis
The Life Of Cyrus is a 19th-century biographical and historical study that integrates biblical prophecy with classical sources to trace the life and empire of Cyrus the Great. This work surveys Hebrew writings (Isaiah, Jeremiah, Daniel, Ezra) alongside Greek and Persian sources (Herodotus, Ctesias, Xenophon, Ferdousi’s Shah Nameh), aiming to reconcile conflicting accounts and illustrate the fulfillment of scripture. It covers the Medes and Persians, Cyrus’s birth and ascent, the overthrow of Astyages, his campaigns against Lydia and Babylon, and the civil administration under Daniel and the satrapal system. The narrative extends to the principal capitals—Pasargade, Persepolis, Susa, and Ecbatana—and concludes with Cyrus’s death and succession. The Preface explains the methodological aim: to show how history and prophecy converge and to present sacred history in light of antiquarian sources. The volume includes dates and a contents list and reflects a Protestant, prophetic-reading approach common to the Religious Tract Society.
