Synopsis
Remarks by David Thom. This pamphlet is a polemical defense by the Rev. David Thom, minister of the Scotch Church at Rodney Street, Liverpool, who was charged before the Presbytery of Glasgow with allegedly heterodox opinions. Published in 1825 with an extensive Appendix, the work comprises a Preface explaining its aim to repel calumnies and identify Thom’s accusers, followed by a series of charges addressed seriatim. Thom asserts that his views align with the Westminster Confession of Faith, defends doctrines such as the two natures in believers, assurance, repentance, and perseverance, and argues that the charges are misrepresented or unfounded. He also critiques the conduct of the Rodney Street Committee, defends congregational rights, and explains the process by which the case was brought to trial. The Appendix contains printed petitions, counter-petitions, and documentary materials relating to the Rodney Street affair, providing context for Thom’s public defense.
