Synopsis
Percy Blake; Or, The Young Rifleman is an 1855 Napoleonic-era adventure novel by Captain Rafter. It follows British officer Percy Blake through the perils and passions of the Peninsular War, from a court-martial scene and a dramatic duel with Alphabet Hopkins to arduous marches and clandestine travels with guerrilleros across the Corunna/Galician frontiers. Joined by Don Pedro, Dona Maria, and a young priest-turned-guide, Blake crosses into Portugal, joins the Light Division, and experiences the siege and battles of Busaco and Ciudad Rodrigo, while balancing duty with a growing romance to Juliana, a novitiate at Santa Clara. Disguises and daring escapes, the smuggling networks she travels with, and the grim realities of war intertwine with moments of tenderness and comic misadventure as the army retreats to Torres Vedras. The novel blends military action, historical detail, and sentimental episodes, including Juliana’s eventual life as a nun and Blake’s bittersweet pursuit of happiness amid the drums of war.
