When Tony Hozol gets a gig as a temporary replacement in the hot country band Clint Cash and the Cowhands, murder is the opening act as a beautiful groupie and a roadie are brutally slain, and to make matters worse, Tony is about to be fired from the band before he can write his new song and solve the murder. Clint Cash and the Cowhands is one of the hottest country acts around, and Tony Kozol is fortunate to have landed the rhythm guitar gig with them, even if it's only until Brian Love, the regular, recovers from a broken arm. The band has settled into a week at the Southwest Music Conference in Austin, and despite the omnipresent, decidedly antagonistic Love, Tony's doing well. That's until Jack Henderson, a roadie, turns up dead. Then a groupie is found in a shallow grave, and Kozol, trying to save his job--and later his life--embarks on his own investigation to find the motive and the killer. Mystery fans will enjoy the clever plot, loopy characters, and sardonic humor. Music fans will find themselves tappin' a toe and swiggin' a longneck to the musical atmosphere of the Austin music scene that Ripley--an Austin musician himself--so carefully re-creates. Fans of Greg Kihn's recent musical mysteries will find a kindred soul in Ripley. Wes Lukowsky

Disillusioned lawyer Tony Kozol (Skulls of Sedona), playing fill-in guitar for a well-known country singer in Austin, helps a young Mexican look for his sister backstage at the Austinland Theater. After Tony discovers a dead crew member, the Mexican promptly disappears, the band's manager blames Tony for possible bad PR, and someone plants narcotics in Tony's guitar case. Unfortunately, the missing sister apparently turns up dead as well, pointing to an unnerving connection to the band. A committed but independent sleuth, deceptive reporter, good buddy detective, and resentful musician add verve to the action-packed plot. Recommended.
