Dr. Frederick Ramsay was born in Baltimore, Maryland. He received his doctorate from the University of Illinois-Westside Medical Campus. After a stint in the Army, he joined the faculty of the University of Maryland, School of Medicine, teaching Anatomy, Embryology and Histology; engaged in research and also served as an Associate Dean. During this time he also pursued studies in theology and in 1971 was ordained an Episcopal priest. He is the author of several scientific and general articles, tracts, theses, and co-author of The Baltimore Declaration. He is an accomplished public speaker and once hosted a television spot, Prognosis, on the evening news for WMAR-TV, Baltimore. He is also an iconographer with works displayed around the world. He lives in Surprise, Arizona with his wife and partner, Susan.
Botswana, well known to mystery fans as the setting for the Precious Ramotswe books, provides the backdrop for this story of human and animal intrigue. Leo Painter, an aging corporate mogul, brings his scheming company directors to a wild game resort to check out future opportunities. Interwoven throughout the human machinations is the parallel tale of Sekoa, a dying lion soon to be ousted by a younger rival. Ray Porter's clear, bold voice works well for the various American characters whose distinct personalities radiate arrogance, superficiality, greed, and duplicity. His intonation and inflection capably differentiate the various characters while managing to capture the treacherous nature of most of them. He is also adept with the soft, melodic African accents. Even though the listener quickly figures out who the villain is, the story is an enjoyable diversion. M.H.N. © AudioFile 2010, Portland, Maine

SUMMARY - Leo Painter is the CEO of Earth Global, a large energy, mining, and real-estate development firm. At the behest of the State Department, he and a party of company executives travel to Botswana, a country rich in extractable resources that Leo-and the U.S. government-would love to access. Traveling with him are his stepson and his wife, a woman with a past and a predilection for trouble. Sekoa is a male lion who shares with many of his bipedal enemies a form of HIV/AIDs. Weakened by the disease, he loses his place as the alpha male in his pride and now, dying and harassed by a pack of hyenas, seeks only a place to rest in peace. Like the lion, Painter is pursued by corporate "hyenas," and is searching for a place where he too can find some rest and build his dream: a resort and casino on Botswana's Chobe River. While a maneater stalks the savannah, greed and overarching ambition lead these players on a collision course as local police, a plucky female game ranger, and other authorities, hoteliers, and tribesmen vie over the spoils.
