Martha Thomas is driving cross-country, at loose ends after her job as a journalist disappears due to corporate downsizing. She's never lived in the country, and certainly not in a remote area like Blue River. But she has nowhere to be and no one expecting her. On a whim, she decides to apply for a position as a lady companion to two girls. Once on the job, Martha's not so sure she should stay. Although beautiful, the ranch is in the middle of nowhere. And the girls she's supposed to watch aren't even living with their parents. Their guardian, rancher Fraser McKenna, is a friend of their mother's. He has no legal documents assigning the young girls to his care. Even after four years, Fraser is still heart-sick about his wife's death during childbirth. He's closed off his emotions, not willing to let anyone into his heart. Well except for Blossom and Daisy. This isn't the first time the girls' free-spirited mother has literally left them on his doorstep, and it probably won't be the last. If only Brenda would come back from her wanderings before he gets too attached to this lady companion. He hired Ms. Martha Thomas because after three months he can no longer ignore ranch business to care for the girls twenty-four hours a day. Besides, he reasons, they're in dire need of female company and instruction. What he doesn't count on is his own need for female company. The Man From Blue River is a touching tale about two very decent, wonderful people stuck in a situation they didn't create, although some may find the characters' sympathy and excuses for a terrible mother a bit irritating.Judith Bowen excels in stories about deep and thoughtful characters where love triumphs even when there are no easy answers!
