9780374269906: Stieglitz: A Memoir / Biography

Alfred Stieglitz, best known for his brilliance as a photographer, was also the most influential exponent in America of modern painting and sculpture. Sue Davidson Lowe's gracefully balanced weave of reminiscence and verifiable fact provides a portrait of Stieglitz that both traces his background and reveals the interplay between his character and his multifaceted career. A grandniece of Stieglitz, whose acquaintance with him encompassed some 21 years, Lowe often draws on her own recollections and those of his friends, relatives, and colleagues.

Throughout his adult life, Stieglitz alternated between New York City and the family compound at Lake George, NY...between the excitement of the avant-garde art world he was creating and the peace and occasional strain of domestic life.

The forcefulness and importance of Stieglitz's career emerge with great clarity from the context of his personal life. We follow him and his family to Europe in 1881, where Alfred soon gave up his engineering studies for photography. On his return to NY in 1980, he championed photography as a fine art: through widespread exhibits of the Photo-Secession group, through 'Camera Work', and through '291,' the gallery he began with Steichen in 1905. There, starting to Matisse in 1908, he introduced Europe's most radical artists, including Picasso, Rousseau, Braque, and Brancusi, to Americans. After 1917, Stieglitz's major efforts went into supporting contemporary American artists at his Intimate Gallery and at An American Place; he continued to produce photographic masterpieces.

The author has assembled over 50 family photos, most of them previously unpublished.

About the Author:

Perhaps no other person has done as much to legitimize the art of photography as did Alfred Stieglitz. Born in 1864 in Hoboken, New Jersey, Stieglitz studied mechanical engineering in Berlin but was always drawn to taking pictures. He won the first of his 150 photography prizes at age 24 in a British competition judged by P.H. Emerson. Returning to New York in 1889, Stieglitz began writing on photography and exhibiting his own work, the most celebrated of which include The Terminal (1893) and The Steerage (1907). In 1902, Stieglitz founded the Photo-Secession group and opened his first gallery, 291, where he exhibited American photographers of the Pictorialist movement, and painters and sculptors including Matisse, Braque, Rodin, and Georgia O'Keeffe, whom he married in 1924. That same year he began publishing the quarterly Camera Work. Stieglitz ran two other art spaces, the Intimate Gallery and An American Place, and continued to photograph until his death in 1946, leaving behind hundreds of studies of O'Keeffe, photographs of Lake George, and New York City views.
