Suzanne Bertish offers a brilliant performance of this beautifully structured novel, the story of a woman's life and, in particular, her relationships with her two sons. Edna O'Brien explores the visceral and spiritual poles of life and presents her conclusions in precise and beautifully wrought prose. Bertish reads this novel as if she'd lived it, with intensity and conviction. She alters pace, tone, timing and voice to give this novel every bit of its considerable emotional power and tells Nell Steadman's story as if she were her advocate. E.J.M.
