ALVIN SCHWARTZ (1927–1992) was a scholar of folklore who wrote many books for young readers, including The Cat's Elbow, illustrated by Margot Zemach. DAVID CHRISTIANA is an associate professor at the University of Arizona School of Art and has illustrated numerous children's books. He lives in Tucson, Arizona.
Grade 6 Up Twenty-eight brief, true tales of treasures buried, sunk, sighted, sought, found, haunted, and some still hunted. These are new-world treasures, chiefly in the United States (New England to California), some in the Caribbean (Spanish galleons laden with gold, silver, and jewels) and in Central and South America. Most of these treasures, treasure-hiders, and treasure-finders have been described in books, newspapers, and magazines, but they are fun to read about again. Schwartz acknowledges his sources in an excellent bibliography and notes that if pursued, they will lead to many more treasure tales. Of particular interest to some is information about ways in which people have hidden treasures and left codes, ciphers, and signs for finding them again. One page is given to a cipher that is unsolved, and the treasure still undiscovered. Charcoal sketches are more decorative than informative, not that they're very decorative. Fascinating stories that will embed themselves in readers' minds. George Gleason, Department of English, Southwest Missouri State University, Springfield
