Grade 4-8-- In 1911, when a lone California Indian walked out of hiding in the hills, ethnographers and anthropologists had one chance to study the culture of the Yahi people. Ishi was the only living member of his tribe; his family had been killed by whites for their scalps. Although it is arguable that the scientists exploited him, they did record a treasure trove of cultural information, including traditional stories of his people, some of which have been translated here for children. This picture book is a composite of stories about Lizard: how he makes arrows, saves his friend from a hungry bear, and leads a group of Dwarf women in a dance. The oral nature of these tales has been honored in this scholarly translation; lines repeat as a refrain, and the rhythm of the language is strong. But making Ishi's world understandable to modern children is no easy task. Unclear references, sudden jumps in the story, and assumptions about the listeners' world view make this text confusing. Bridging this cultural chasm could be done with skillful illustration. Unfortunately the crudely made, torn-paper art does not inform readers. There is no sense of the unique landscape of the Sierra foothills or of the physical culture of these people. Elements missing from the text--foreshadowing, characterization, transitions, and informative details--are not supplied by the chaotic pictures. With interpretation, this book could be used with older children who already know about Ishi or who are studying California Indians. A folktale dictated in 1911 by the man called Ishi, lone survivor of the Yana people of northern California, comprises the main text of this unusual book. In it, the man called Lizard (and portrayed as a man-lizard by artist Roth) must fight a bear and enemies called the Yawi in order to save a friend and continue his work of arrow-making. There is a formalism in the short phrases and repetition reminiscent of Greek drama. The author's informed comments, in both her acknowledgments and her introduction, serve as a lucid segue to the fragments of story that follow. Roth's boldly primitivist paper collages are graphically effective. Though this elegantly packaged book contains many praiseworthy elements, it's difficult to imagine a child being moved by it. Lacking a childlike viewpoint, the work may be better suited, for example, to adults with a taste for the strange and not in need of a story. Ages 8-up.
