Gr 4-6 After retiring from a career in archaeology, Basil Beaudesert, a mouse, makes his home in a museum of ancient art in Boston. So does the museum director's cat, Pa-Ti-Paw. Since Pa-Ti-Paw's efforts to clear the museum of mice have given Basil a broken arm, the mouse gathers his friends to perpetrate a hoax by manufacturing Egyptian artifacts honoring mice and humiliating cats. Basil, the typical Sherlockian know-it-all, also solves a minor mystery about a cameo. A hefty number of references to Egyptian and Roman antiquities abound, but the endpapers provide an illustrated glossary. Kirby's style is witty in the manner of Kenneth Grahame. The story itself, though, is slow and bland, with neither the feeling of Wind in the Willows nor the fast-paced action of Graham Oakley's Church Mice (Atheneum). The format is too childish for the necessary reading and comprehension level, although the illustrationsdelicate watercolor and pencil drawings in muted tonesare both pleasant and entertaining.
