Grade 7 Up When 14-year-old orphan Laurel Bybank is retained as maid to Alice Plunderell, she has no idea of the terrifying circumstances she will en counter at mysterious Plunderell Man or: a teenage mistress kept prisoner in her room by a murderous aunt and un cle, a hidden treasure, an abandoned monastery, and a clutch of villainous servantsand that's just for starters. Frissons abound in this beautifully told tale of England in the 1850s. Both skill ful send-up and affectionate homage to the conventions of the Gothic romance, The Treasure of Plunderell Manor is also a compellingly readable historical novel which imparts considerable infor mation about Victorian social life, cus toms, and attitudes, including the be nighted views of Roman Catholics which were espoused by Anglican land ed gentry and lower classes alike. If this sounds didactic, it isn't, for Clements is a talented and convincing storyteller with a rich gift for characterization (Laurel is magnificently memorable!), and a style which is both elegantly sim ple and eloquently evocative. Cle ments' book is the real treasure here. Michael Cart, Beverly Hills Public Lib .

Orphaned Laurel Bybank is on her way to take up her post as maidservant to Alice Plunderell, heiress of the Plunderell fortune. When Laurel nears the manor, she is stopped on the road by young John Frame, a former steward to the estate. John warns Laurel that Lord and Lady Stayne, Alice's greedy guardians, plan to kill their ward for the sake of her fortune. But the most valuable part of Alice's inheritance is her grandfather's treasure chest, which lies hidden somewhere on the Plunderell lands. The Staynes are convinced that Alice knows where the treasure is locatedand they hope to use Laurel to coax this information from her. This lively adventure tale, with its cast of eccentric characters, will keep young readers enthralled. The Victorian setting brings to mind Joan Aiken's The Wolves of Willoughby Chase. Ages 12-up.
