Kindergarten-Grade 3-- Calico cats are usually female, but Wendell is not your usual cat in this fantasy picture book. His human family can not see the various elfin creatures who misplace cutlery, hide eyeglasses, and disrupt the lights and TV, and when Wendell tries to control them, he is blamed for their mischief. Locked out for the night, Wendell is let in when the family finds a mouse in the kitchen, and he sends the creatures packing in addition to scaring the mouse away. Nones' first book is in a photographic style, with (excruciatingly) detailed 1950s interiors and somewhat stiffly posed scenes of the family life of a small girl and her parents. Wendell appears in no-nonsense color portraits befitting a hero, and the "invisible" creatures are imagined as garishly colored cartoon characters of various sorts to set them off from reality. Whenever anything is missing or broken, Wendell the cat automatically is assumed to be responsible. One night, however, the house is taken over by an increasing number of invisible gremlins. Their shenanigans cause Wendell to be shut outside for the night. Only when a mouse scares the family do they finally recognize Wendell's assets as a rodent--and gremlin--remover. In his pictures, Nones underlines the contrasts between the drabness of the family, the fidelity of the cat and the mischievous sparkle of the gremlins. In dusty pastel tones, Nones's drawings recall the quintessential 1950s house: dinette set, funky wallpapers and an outmoded black-and-white TV set. And yes, there is even a pink flamingo in the yard. Ages 3-up.
