Reviews

Dr. Kay Scarpetta is clearly back in her most unpredictable and haunting investigation yet. Cornwell (Unnatural Exposure, Audio Reviews, LJ 10/15/97) masterfully intertwines past and present concerns and fears in this wholly entertaining mystery. The present murder/arson cases pull Scarpetta through introspection, self-reflection, and self-doubt, allowing both her and her fans to recall past battles and their intrigues. At times the novel is vividly gruesome, challenging reader Kate Reading to balance the narrative between clinical calm and personal terror. The surprises Cornwell plants throughout the story offer a demanding pace. The production does not employ the usual indicators to announce the breaks or beginnings of each tape so this version may cause problems for some listeners, especially the visually impaired. Highly recommended for adult audiences.?Joyce Kessel, Villa Maria Coll., Buffalo, NY

The past comes back to haunt Medical Examiner Kay Scarpetta. As she investigates the death of a woman who was killed in a mysterious fire, Scarpetta must also worry about her former adversary, the psychopathic Carrie Grethen, who has vowed revenge against Scarpetta and company. Kate Reading gives a truly emotional and gut-wrenching performance. Having portayed Scarpetta three times now, Reading knows the character and becomes her. She draws the listener into the story, enabling us to feel Scarpetta's pain and distress as she faces the most tragic moment of her life. Although the mood of the story is dark, Reading's multi-dimensional performance also captures some lighter moments between major characters Scarpetta and Marino. This is a don't-miss episode for Scarpetta fans. With Reading at the helm, listeners won't be disappointed. M.H.S. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine
