Since White is a beloved National Public Radio commentator and author of the best-selling Mama Makes Up Her Mind, it is hardly surprising that this first novel is getting the red-carpet treatment: not only is this a Literary GuildR selection, but there's a multimedia advertising campaign, an 18-city author tour, a national bookseller contest, and a 150,000-copy first printing. Oh yes, the plot. White takes us to a little Southern town where Roger tries to save peanuts from pests while falling in love with the mysterious Della, a painter of chickens.
