Six of Poe’s most macabre tales are presented in this powerfully illustrated edition that comes with an unabridged CD narration of four of the shorter tales. The classic tales included on the 75 minute CD and read by Edward Blake are “The Masque of the Red Death,” “The Black Cat,” “The Tell-Tale Heart,” and “The Cask of Amontillado.” The two longer tales in the collection are the heart-stopping “The Pit and the Pendulum” and the chilling “The Fall of the House of Usher.” In addition to his striking woodcut-type illustrations, Michael McCurdy has written fascinating headnotes about the origin of each tale and an introduction about Poe.

Michael McCurdy is a renown wood engraver whose illustrations appear in magazines, annual reports, advertising, special limited editions, and in children’s books such as American Tall Tales by Mary Pope Osborne and Escape from Slavery: The Boyhood of Frederick Douglass in His Own Words. Michael McCurdy lives in Great Barrington, Massachusetts.
Gr. 6-9. This collection includes six of Poe's most famous tales, unabridged: "The Masque of Red Death," "The Black Cat," "The Pit and the Pendulum," "The Tell-Tale Heart," "The Cask of Amontillado," and "The Fall of the House of Usher." In the introduction, McCurdy discusses of Poe's life and remarks on the darkness of Poe's nature, reflected in his work, and the physical darkness of his world after sundown, reflected in the illustrations. The 18 full-page, black-and-white scratchboard-style pictures are suitably dramatic and often macabre. This handsome volume, to be accompanied by a CD that features readings of four of the tales, offers a good introduction to Poe's fiction. Carolyn Phelan
