Synopsis
In his Los Angeles gallery, Leon Saulter is surrounded by the remarkable variety of his art forms. Self taught and prolific, he works with wood, oils, pen and ink, resin in paintings and sculpture, and, most often, stone: marble, granite, onyx, jade, sandstone and alabaster. Yet all his media reflect a basic theme. As in Listen to Yourself, it is a concern with man and his emotional environment; with triumph and adversity; loneliness; and the gladness in people reaching each other. Leon Saulter's art has been displayed from coast to coast-from the Los Angeles County Museum of Art to American Contemporary Artists Galleries in New York. His unique works can be found in banks, hospitals, university parks, neighborhood playgrounds, and innumerable private collections. Saulter has also been a pioneer in art therapy for children and a frequent guest lecturer at colleges and universities. The artist was born in Poland in 1908 and fled to the United States with his family when he was thirteen. Here he lived and worked on a farm in New Jersey; spent several years as an itinerant laborer; hitchhiked to Los Angeles in 1929 and worked as a riveter in the San Pedro shipyards and as a dental technician. The world of art was, as yet, foreign to him. Then one day he came Upon a photographic study of sculpture. "If I could do that, I would be a happy man," he said. "Have you ever tried?" His response is evident today in his studio, his gallery, and this book.
