From the Publisher:
Bernie Magruder knows that almost anything can happen in the old Bessledorf Hotel, where his father is the manager. With a bus depot on one side and a funeral parlor on the other, all sorts of people are around, and all sorts of things take place on the three floors of the Bessledorf.

But when a ghost begins to make a regular appearance in the hotel -- a silent ghost in a pale blue light -- panic sets in. Even Bernie is worried, though not as worried as his mother, who, when she learns that the ghost appears to be about the same age as Bernie, is afraid he has come to take Bernie to his grave.

Finally, the future of the Bessledorf is at stake as word of the ghost goes out, and it is up to Bernie and his friends, Georgene and Weasel, to figure out why the ghost has come and what can be done to solve the mystery.

Anything can happen in a building as old as the Bessledorf, but when Bernie Magruder is there to dig up the reasons for mysterious happenings, the results are always entertaining and most of the time downright funny.

From School Library Journal:
Grade 4-6 --As readers of two previous Bessledorf books will know, the zany Magruder family lives in the Bessledorf Hotel, where Mr. Magruder is manager. When a ghost begins to make appearances at the foot of his sister's bed, young Bernie Magruder sets out to discover the reasons for the haunting. His clever investigations reveal the ghost's identity, but no one can figure out what it wants or why it has suddenly appeared, and it is unable to talk. When Bernie finally puzzles it all out, the ghost is safely laid to rest. There's no need to have read the previous adventures to appreciate this one. The ghost is appropriately spooky, but the story is liberally laced with humor; the plot flows along nicely, with enough suspense to keep the pages turning. Especially entertaining is Officer Feeney, the policeman whose beat includes the strange goings on at the Bessledorf. Readers will like Bernie, whose deductive reasoning and perseverance finally pay off, and the colorful and appealing cover art will help to sell this story, which may hook more than a few reluctant readers and will surely appeal to Naylor's many fans. --Bruce Anne Shook, Mendenhall Middle School, Greensboro, NC
