Grade 4-6-Abbie dreams of living in a real house on the Nebraska prairie instead of in the soddy built by her father. Her mother wants her to be content with her life instead of constantly complaining about their current situation, and her father tells her that all good things come to those who wait. When her brother dies, she blames herself and must find the strength and courage to help her family overcome their grief. This heartwarming tale of one girl's perseverance in the face of adversity is reminiscent of the work of Laura Ingalls Wilder. The author captures well the struggles, hardships, and rewards sought by the settlers of the Nebraska prairie in the 1850s. The main characters are strong, believable individuals, facing loneliness, threats of Indian attacks, sickness, and sometimes death, but never losing sight of their goals. Abbie's mother symbolizes a unifying force holding the family together, while her father's optimistic, consoling reassurances help Abbie realize that her prayers will be answered.
