Grade 5 Up-- It is difficult to conceive of children picking up this hefty tome on their own to discover the secrets of successful creative writing. The emphasis on the process approach to teaching writing; the growing acceptance by educators of the connection between reading and writing for all students is apparent in the subjects included. Cassedy discusses several types of fiction; more than a third of the book is devoted to explaining poetry, with a separate chapter on haiku. There is also an excellent chapter on letter writing. A caveat: in the chapter on school reports, Cassedy proposes that students go immediately to encyclopedias. This method is antithetical to the process approach, which suggests that students acquire a basic background on subjects from both fiction and nonfiction books before taking notes from encyclopedia articles. Because of the variety of topics covered, however, the book might be used by teachers and librarians who are exploring different literary genres with their students. Libraries owning the first edition definitely would not need to add this one. --Martha Rosen, Edgewood School, Scarsdale, NY
