The Huang Shan mountain range in central China has been a site of pilgrimages for Chinese artists for centuries. Its dramatic rock formations, pine trees, and mists still attract large numbers of visitors, including veteran French photographer Riboud, who photographed the mountains for this book. A wide variety of images are reproduced, including portraits, vegetation, and fantastic landscapes just like the Chinese paintings that can seem so unreal to Western eyes. Brief meditative essays by Riboud and Francois Cheng and basic information on travel to Huang Shan today comprise the text. The photographs, most filled with mist, will fascinate a wide audience from general readers to specialists, though not all of the images survive the printing process without an unfortunate graininess.
