Julian Travis looks back on her life as a child television star, her nearly twenty-year marriage, and her current, lesbian relationship

Feminist author and poet Morgan's first novel is the long, convoluted story of Julian Travis, women's movement spokesperson and former child TV star, who is in a period of personal crisis. Feminism aside, Julian's crisis (common to women at midlife) is due: her mother is dying, her marriage is breaking apart, and money is short. And her past haunts her: Little Momma, raising Julian alone, profiting from her stardom and deceiving her about her absent father, causing her to run at 19 to Laurence, gentle '60s revolutionary and artist turned reluctant househusband as Julian's feminist prominence increased. Exhausted and dispirited, Julian turns to old friend bisexual Iliana, who provides nurture and love but not all Julian needs (which might be simply a room of her own and more sleep). Morgan tackles genuine problems, but her messages are obscured by self-conscious polemics. Michele Leber, Fairfax Cty. P.L., Va.
