Reviews

Two military simulation specialists have compiled a complex database of all wars between 1787 and 1987, certain future wars, and some wars that might have occurred but did not. From this they derive general statements about how wars start, proceed, and stop. A companion to Dunnigan's A Quick and Dirty Guide to War and How To Make War , this continues the approach of brief, irreverent analysis of complicated situations. The authors provide unsettling insights to many international relationships and make apparently irrational events fall into relatively orderly categories, clarifying much that is murky. Readable; likely to be popular. Edwin B. Burgess, U.S. Army TRALINET Ctr., Fort Monroe, Va.
