PreSchool-Grade 1-- An introductory book of basic concepts about the human body and various aspects of home and community life. Each of the 18 topics is introduced on a double-page spread filled with brightly colored illustrations and a minimum of text. The treatments range in sophistication from a basic picture and caption depiction of holidays to a discussion of how human life is created, naming sperm and eggs and showing the development of the fetus. This is not a book to be used by children alone, but it can provide a good springboard for discussion. Many of the topics are part of the general primary grade curriculum; only "storytelling" seems superfluous. For the most part the writing is good, but falls from simple to simplistic in spots, i.e., "the doctor may take your temperature. . .to find out how hot you are." The pictures are average but clear and appropriate to the text, usually peopled by multi-racial puffy-faced children and jowly adults. The nature of the book makes this more appropriate for personal collections or for comprehensive teacher collections; most libraries have books on the individual topics that kids would find more useful. --Denise L.
